ALERT: GOP moves to kill independent ethics oversight office

Outrageous. In a surprise vote last night, Republicans moved to gut the independent Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE). Instead of "draining the swamp," the new Congress is working very hard to make sure corruption, bribery, and constitutional violations go unnoticed.

Congress is voting to finalize this this TODAY. Call your House Representative's office immediately and urge them to OPPOSE this bill. Tell FIVE friends, coworkers, and/or family to do the same.

Go to whoismyrepresentative.com to easily look up your Representative's contact information by entering your zip code.

The OCE was created in March 2008 after the cases of former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif., who served more than seven years in prison on bribery and other charges; as well as cases of former Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, who was charged in the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal and pleaded guilty to corruption charges and former Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., convicted on corruption in a separate case.

History has already shown us that lawmakers cannot police themselves about ethical violations. This new law limits the OCE's ability to accept whistleblower tips and disclose findings to the public. It allows Congress to shut down independent investigations into member misconduct. Remind Congress today that they work for you, and that you demand the OCE remains in tact.
